MOOR’S HEADS – TESTE DI MORO

The legend of the Moor’s Head is one of Sicily’s most famous stories, explaining the origin of the iconic ceramic vases known as Teste di Moro. According to the most widespread version, a young Sicilian woman fell in love with an Arab traveler during the Arab period. When she discovered he had a wife and children waiting for him at home, she killed him in a jealous rage, cut off his head, and used it as a pot to plant basil. The plant grew exceptionally well, prompting neighbors to imitate the idea by crafting ceramic head-shaped vases.
